Let Them Eat Cake!

In the past few months I have attended a number of birthday gatherings; some were for family and others were for friends. Having grown up in a home where traditional birthday cake was the gold standard for celebrations, I fully expected to be served cake, but was surprised to find less traditional items like brownies, grasshopper pie, angel food cake and fruit pies. While all of these were exceptional desserts, there was just something unusual about sticking candles in a berry pie. While cake is always my first dessert choice, it definitely is my primary pick for my birthday. Yes, I like boring old white cake with white butter cream frosting. And don't try to pull that whipped frosting nonsense over on me either because I know the difference. So am I the last true cake lover who refuses to conform to the brownies and pies that are taking over the birthday world, or are there others out there who think a good old fashioned birthday cake is still the way to celebrate? Let me know in the poll to your right :) PS.....Cayla talks about her birthday year-found, but with it quickly approaching in June she's had a lot more to say about it. She and I had conversation the other day that went something like this: Cayla: Mom, when it's my birthday why do you buy me a cake instead of making me one? Mom: Because the stores do such a lovely job decorating, so I assumed that's the kind of cake you would want. Cayla: Well, I like a home-made cake. Mom: Really? Better than store bought cake? Is that what you want for your birthday this year? Cayla: Yep. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Your home-made frosting. She's definitely her mother's child. She LOVES cake! Couldn't you just eat her up?!

I love cake but NOT white on white! Even my wedding cake was chocolate. I still do cake but after watching Food Detectives(FN again!)I probably won't put candles in the whole thing-just one piece. I'm no germophobe but I couldn't believe how icky a cake can get after someone has blown on it! Ewwww!

I am not a cake lover, especially white on white. I tend to like to spice my birthday up with different request. Some years I want cheesecake, some years Red Velvet, and sometimes even German Chocolate Brownies. I am with you though, why bake something when you can buy it:)

I can't believe the choices in your survey. How in the world do you expect me to pick between brownies and turtle cheesecake which isn't even listed. Cake is definitely NOT my favorite, but if I have it I am with Cayla on liking homemade frosting, my personal favorite is made with Hershey's cocoa. If I must eat cake I like chocolate cake with cheesecake frosting. Do you see a cheesecake theme going on here?

I too love cheesecake - but I think that falls in the 'frou frou dessert' category! I totally forgot about cream cheese frosting. WOW! Yum!

I agree with you 100%, Rachel. You know what they say about great minds!!
White on white is the best and only butter cream...don't think I won't know the difference.
I actually have a yellow with butter cream ready for the final birthday of birthday month at our house tonight! If I could, I'd drop a piece off for you to enjoy.
LET US EAT CAKE!
