Potpourri
No, not the smelly, fragrant kind, the variety-kind. It's been a totally tumultuous Tuesday (yeah, I'm still in rhyme mode). It started off with what seemed a normal dental cleaning. Everything was going well until I mentioned that I had a tooth bothering me. After a few x-rays and some discussion with the dentist, he recommended I see the endodontist. Off I go to make an appointment only to find out they have an opening today. What luck! I meet with the endodontist and 15 minutes, and $96.00 later he informs me I have something called 'tooth resorption' and my tooth has to be pulled. Seriously? I thought that was only for hillbillys and inbreds who don't take care of their teeth. Turns out, it's what happens when your cells turn on your tooth and/or bone and start eating it. No wonder my mouth has been sore, my tooth is amok with infection. Fortunately, it's the very last tooth on the top and it won't be noticeable, so at least for now, I won't have to pay for an implant when I see the oral surgeon. And that's on my agenda for Wednesday....make appointment with the oral surgeon!

In other news, I just read today that Obama wants to expand the current public school day to 9 hours, and shorten summer breaks. Apparently the US is lagging behind Europe and we need to be more like them. I thought that's why we left England in the first place, we didn't want to be like them.

Congress is also considering a bill that would give babies born in America a $500 savings account to be accessed when they're 18. Hey what's a few more bucks on top of our $1.4 trillion debt?

And my personal favorite....environmentalists want toilet paper to be recycled AND reduced to single ply. My guess is that it won't save much when people are using 3x as much to make up for the loss.
Those are just the tip of the ice berg, but in an effort to avoid my political soap box, I'll stop there. You know you're glad I did :)

Funny about the school days in America vs. Europe. At least where I'm at public school days are very long and summers are short BUT...
the reason is because schools are not open from 11:30-1:30 pm for lunch break (at home with parents!), there is no school on Wednesdays, and there are vacations sprinkled all throughout the year (week in Oct., 3 weeks for Christmas, week in Feb, 2 weeks for spring vacation) It may appear that kids are "in school" more than America, but really I betcha it works out about the same. Perhaps it's not the time but the content (not saying teachers aren't doing a good job), but we need to expect more out of kids. They are capable of a lot. When Swiss kids go to college in America and find it "amazingly easy" something's wrong. just my 2 cents
You crack me up!!! I totally feel ya on the tooth deal, I dealt with an abscessed tooth last year. Expensive and painful! Laughing at your political views because it is so down to earth and what most of think and just don't express.
I am with you- cutting t.p. down to 1 ply would only result in more waste! It is like cheap diapers- if I use twice as many they actually cost me more! Here in CO we have an "extended school year"- but everyone gets out early on Thursdays and there are 2- TWO- two week long breaks BEFORE Christmas! What the heck are we paying our teachers for?!:) BTW: in your response to Kim's lastest post there is a store called Aldi's in the midwest that does charge for cart use and they do return your full fee. I think it is a great idea as long as stores aren't charging extra. I always try to return my cart just because I feel bad for the cart boy!
